The Mind's Eye

I recently read The Mind's Eye, by Oliver Sacks (Here's his website). His book was interesting, informative, and taught me many things about the eye I had never known before. It's made me interested to go and look for more information and books about vision and the eye.

This book was very serious, went into lots of details, and showed very well how different things worked. The book talked about people who had problems with their eyes. It was made up of stories like the stories of a man who was a writer but lost the ability to read, people who can see people perfectly well but can't recognize faces, (even their own family,) and finally his own struggles with vision, after an eye tumor. He explained exactly what was going on inside their eyes, down to the smallest details. He really showed what was happening in all the different parts of the brain with a lot of detail. He told you how he saw and figured out the different problems people had. And he explained how different people dealt with these problems, and lived with them.

This was a fairly good, interesting book, and I learned many things. But, it had many issues. Sometimes the extreme detail got so boring I wanted to switch books. And a lot of it was very confusing, because it talked about things inside the brain and eye I didn't understand at all. It really could've used some images to show some of these things. Also, It wasn't written in a way that made me want to continue reading at all. There were a few positives though, I did come away knowing a lot more than I had before. But, in conclusion, the bads seriously outweigh the good. If I had to rate this book I would give it 2 out of 5 stars. Unless you like books that go into an incredibly large amount of boring, confusing detail, I would NOT recommend this book.
