A Briefer History of Time

Albert Einstein

    A Briefer History of Time

A short book on the theory of the universe. I know it sounds crazy but if you take a deeper look into it you will understand what I am talking about. In the book a Briefer Time of History by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow it talks about many theories and talks all about physics and astronomy and about all of the discoveries that people have come across the years of that have been created of thousands of years. For each chapter it talks about different exciting  theories that have been developed and theories that are still trying to be proved to this day. If you are interested in how the universe works but you haven't really studied astronomy or physics that much this book would be great for you. Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow talk about advanced theories for example he explained quantum physics in one chapter of the book. One of the many interesting chapters that has really interested me was the theory about black holes. The chapter really got me interested into black holes and some theories connect to each other. Through out the whole book  almost every chapter draws you in and before you know it you've finished the book with vast more amounts of knowledge.
Stephen Hawking & Leonard Mlodinow
I will admit some theories will not come to you for example in the third chapter the writers talks about quantum physics, this is not a easy theory to understand so don't expect every theory to be a walk in the park to understand. The book holds very detailed magnificent illustrations some almost look real. This book is one of a kind it even tells you about sciences to come in the future and some science that we can only imagine like traveling at the speed of light (also known as time traveling). A Briefer History of Time contains 12 chapters with each chapter holding about 5-7 pages per chapter. Stephen Hawking has another book similar to this one called a Brief History of Time but clearly labeled on the cover A Briefer History of time is more concise and it has all of the latest research. I feel like if you've always had questions about the universe, space, time, physics that no one could answer this book would be a perfect fit for you, take a chance to learn about what a worm hole really is, or what quantum gravity is. When it comes to knowing the facts this book has them from theories you think you know like the back for hands for theories, that you have never even heard of, take a chance and explore the unknown.

The Secret of The Yellow Death

The front cover of the book
THE YELLOW DEATH
Written as a mystery story about a medical discovery, The Secret Of The Yellow Death brings the reader the terrifying story of how the yellow fever was devastating to armies and civilian populations. It was until the secret of the disease was uncovered, the Yellow fever was a disease that  In mild cases, caused fever, headache, nausea and vomiting. But yellow fever can become more serious, causing heart, liver and kidney problems along with bleeding (hemorrhaging). Up to 50 percent of people with a more severe form of yellow fever, will die of the disease. The

book described all of those symptoms in captivating, and sometimes gory, detail. The story reveals  the efforts of scientists that struggled against all odds to find a way to stop the spreading of Yellow Fever. Most remarkable in my opinion, are the sacrifices of one's self made by American doctors Walter Reed ( who was a U.S. Army pathologist and bacteriologist who led the experiments that proved that yellow fever was transmitted by mosquito bite), James Carroll, Jesse Lazear, who unfortunately died while testing an antivirus for the yellow fever, and Cuban born physician, Aristides Agramonte. This team moved between the U.S. and the effected region of Cuba, where they study the particular deadly outbreak of the fever. Often, they risk their own lives by being amongst patients and using their own bodies to test their theories of infections and cures. The book provides helpful visual aids by including photographs and colorful drawings, making this scientific data easy to comprehend. This true story is as exiting as any other thriller. It is guaranteed to hold readers spellbound, as they partake in a race against the clock to prevent this outbreak from spreading among wider populations.

All Creatures Great and Small

The book All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot talks about many of his stories of being a country veterinarian and learning the lifestyles of the farmers that he works with. James Herriot is from Scotland but got a job in Yorkshire, England as an assistant to Siegfried Farnon at Skeldale house (the veterinary office as well as the Farnon's home). Herriot is in his 20's and Farnon is in his 30's at the time of the story (20th Century). Herriot loves animals and nature, and Farnon has a strange character and always has to be right. Siegfried has a younger brother, Tristan, who is a veterinarian in training (and is not at all appreciated by his older brother). The book follows some of Herriot's most memorable stories, from a lady called Mrs. Pumfrey and her fat dog Trickie Woo to when he first meet his wife. Some of my personal favorite stories are when a man comes up to Herriot at the movies and starts talking about his cow and how the prescription wasn't working, but Herriot had no idea who the man was so he just kept saying yes.......yes, and nodding his head. I also love Mrs. Pumfrey's names for what her dog is doing, such as flop bot and "he's going crackerdog again!" However, be warned for not all of the stories are funny or happy, some of them are quite sad, from an old man who only had his sick dog left in life to people who can barely afford to feed themselves let alone all of their farm animals.

Book Cover

All Creatures Great and Small was published in 1962, however the story took place before because its an autobiography of James Herriot's personal life as a veterinarian. Fun fact; the authors name was actually James Alfred Wight  but he had to use a pseudonym so that the book wouldn't seem like an advertisement for the veterinary office (all the other names in the book were fake as well (see if you can figure out the names of the brothers) I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who thinks that they are strong reader because there are many complicated veterinary terms. However if you don't think you're a strong reader or if you just don't like reading watch the BBC television series instead.
